Repointing

The mortar between the stones is what keeps water out of a wall. Over time it cracks, crumbles and falls out, especially on walls that face the weather. Once that happens, rain gets into the joints and the stone itself starts to suffer.

Repointing means raking out the old, failing mortar and filling the joints with fresh mortar. Done properly, it protects the stone and makes the whole wall look sharper.

Why the right mortar matters on sandstone

Traditional sandstone walls were built to breathe. Under One Roof, the Scottish charity that advises on looking after traditional buildings, explains that hard cement pointing can trap water in sandstone, where frost then damages the stone. A softer, more breathable mortar lets the wall dry out instead.

What is repointing and when is it needed?
Repointing means raking out the old mortar between stones or bricks and replacing it with fresh mortar. It is usually needed when the pointing is loose, crumbling, cracked or missing, which lets water get into the wall and speeds up damage to the stone.
Why does the type of mortar matter on sandstone?
Traditional sandstone walls need to breathe. Hard cement pointing can trap moisture in the stone, which then gets damaged by frost. Softer, more breathable mortar lets the wall dry out properly. Duncan will talk you through the right mortar for your wall before any work starts.
